Breast lift surgery
Plastic surgery is becoming more and more popular and has been linked to improving a patient’s self-esteem and quality of life.
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, breast lift surgery is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic surgical procedures in the United States. Last year, alone, more than 100,000 breast lift procedures were performed in the U.S.
Breast lift surgery, also know as mastopexy surgery, is a cosmetic procedure designed to reshape the patient’s breasts. Disproportionate breast size and shape, otherwise known as breast asymmetry, is a common condition among women. While most women are born with uneven breasts, significant changes in size and shape usually occur with age and other factors such as pregnancy and breast feeding.
Because breast asymmetry is not yet an openly discussed topic, many women with disproportionate breast size and shape suffer from low self-esteem and issues with their sexuality.
Recent findings reveal, however, that surgical procedures designed to even out a patient’s breasts, such as the breast lift, can dramatically enhance a patient’s quality of life and self esteem. A Brazilian study released in a recent edition of the Aesthetic Surgery Journal, for example, measured the quality of life among 35 participants before and after undergoing surgery to even out their breast size and shape.
All 35 participants showed an improvement in their emotional and mental health and a significant increase in their self-esteem just 6 months after the procedure. This study and others like it prove that there is a direct correlation between breast asymmetry and self-esteem, which goes to show why more and more women are undergoing breast lift surgery each year.
Although there have been technological advances in breast lift surgery, making the results more natural and long-lasting, there are still some risks and potential complications that may occur such as: unfavorable scarring, infection, changes in nipple or breast sensation, swelling and bruising, skin discoloration, excess firmness of the breast and prolonged discomfort and pain.
