Cosmetic Industry Affected by the Economy
Times are hard. People are holding their nest eggs closer to their chests, taking caution in their spending; waiting to hear the economy is getting stronger, better. But what are people holding out on to? Luxury items — clothes, jewelry, that new car they had their eyes on, and anything they deem unnecessary.
But what about personal care? Yes, people are considering holding off on things to enhance their appearance and self esteem as well. For this reason, plastic surgeon offices and spas are feeling the pinch.
Plastic Surgeons and Spas Trying to Pick up Business
As a result of the decrease in cosmetic procedures, spas and plastic surgery offices are now offering specials and discounts to encourage potential clients who are on the fence because of the economy. Among those offering specials are some of the most prestigious establishments, where the word “discount” has never before been heard.
In fact, a recent study conducted by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons revealed that 62 percent of the practitioners involved in the study reported a drop in cosmetic procedures over the course of the first half of the year.
The same study revealed that 59 percent of women who have been thinking about undergoing plastic surgery said they are holding off due to the economy.
In an article published in the Life and Travel section of the Dallas News, the author gives consumers suggestions on how to maximize these special offers and as she puts it, “Have your face and peel it too.”
Of these, helpful consumer tips, I find the most valuable to be:
• Become a Frequent Flyer: Meaning, instead of purchasing one massage or microdermabrasion, book a series of three or four at a time and be sure to ask if the spa or office is offering a series package for booking in advance.
• Negotiate: According to the study, most plastic surgeons don’t mind giving you a discounted price, if you ask. This, of course, depends on the place, the procedure and various other circumstances. However, it never hurts to ask.
• Consider Bundling: This refers to the package deal. Because spas and plastic surgeons are relying heavily on return business from those who can afford their services, most of them are offering special discounted prices on package deals, involving more than one cosmetic procedure at a time. For example, if you are thinking about getting a massage, be sure to consider getting the royal treatment by adding on a facial, manicure and pedicure as well.
• Schedule Your Appointment at Off Times: Think of this helpful hint as if you were booking your tropical vacation during hurricane season, or your wedding in the winter months. Most people tend to book their cosmetic procedures on the weekends, but not you! You should consider booking your appointment earlier in the week and seeing if the spa/ plastic surgery office is offering any beginning of the week specials.
• Narrow Your Target: Schedule a private consultation with your surgeon before deciding what procedure you are going to go with. Make sure to share your aesthetic goals and your budget with your surgeon so he/she can help you determine what the best approach is without breaking your bank.
• Use the Buddy System: Call ahead of time and ask to schedule two appointments. Check with the receptionist to see if they are offering package deals for the dual session.
These tips are helpful to consider when thinking about scheduling your next cosmetic procedure or medical spa appointment. Times may be tough, but that doesn’t mean you have to say goodbye to your own well being. It just means, be smart about your decisions and look for specials; chances are your goals will fit within your financial reach.
