BOARD CERTIFICATION
It is a term that is bantered about -discussed -mentioned - or even questioned, what is it?
I think in today’s medical marketplace it is very relevant for prospective patients to understand the concept of board certification.
A board certified physician has gone through many years of rigorous training and has met a certain standard of achievement. After years of training and perhaps a fellowship there are also a series of examinations - first written and then oral exams. You do not become board certified by paying a $100 induction or membership fee. I think it’s important to ask a physician who is board certified, which board has certified you? There are many boards today but only one Board of Plastic Surgery. A board certified plastic surgeon is able to discuss all of your particular needs, desires and expectations. They can discuss everything from non-surgical alternatives all the way to the most advanced surgical techniques and procedures. I have seen patients with several thousand dollars of fillers placed in their face and they come in and say, “I don’t see any difference!” Sure, what they needed was a facelift, neck lift or whatever/something their doctor couldn’t offer because they were not a board certified plastic surgeon. So today I would say buyers beware, do not be a timid consumer, ask questions. There is no substitute for board certification and years of actual surgical experience.
