New Jersey Surgeon Develops Seventy Five Minute Face and Neck Lift
Dr. William Bass of Hackensack New Jersey has assembled a kit of established cosmetic surgery tools into a minimally invasive face and neck rejuvenation procedure. The process has been trademarked with the name of Cool Lift, reflecting perhaps the reduced use of surface laser heat on the skin, and the subsequent reduced swelling following the procedure. (more…)

Times are hard. People are holding their nest eggs closer to their chests, taking caution in their spending; waiting to hear the economy is getting stronger, better. But what are people holding out on to? Luxury items — clothes, jewelry, that new car they had their eyes on, and anything they deem unnecessary. (more…)

Sagging Breasts Not Due to Breast Feeding: Contrary to Popular Belief
December 8th, 2008 -
Sagging breasts, also known as breast ptosis, have long been associated with child birth and breast feeding. However, the results of a study led by Brian Rinker, MD published in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal recently identified the precise reasons for breast droopiness or breast sagging. Interestingly enough, breast feeding was not identified as a factor in the development of sagging breasts. The study involved over 90 patients that had breast surgery between 1998 and 2006.
Breast shape did alter following pregnancy in over 50% of the study participants. Yet, the influence of lifestyle habits and age were determined responsible for breast sagging in the study participants. The components for evaluation in the study included: age, number of pregnancies, time duration of breastfeeding, pre-pregnancy breast size, body mass index, weight gain and loss, history of cigarette smoking and degree of pre surgery breast sagging. The results of the study were, as follows:
- Older Age women are more susceptible to breast sagging
- Overweight women and those with a high body mass index were more likely to have breast sagging
- Number of pregnancies has an impact on the appearance of sagging breasts.
- Women with a larger breast size prior to pregnancy were more likely to have breast sagging.
- Women that had or were currently smoking were at greater risk for breast sagging.
In the final analysis, women can have greater assurance that breast sagging will not result from breast feeding, regardless of the time duration in breast feeding. Of course, the risk of breast sagging increases from several other factors relating to pregnancy itself. However, there are recommendations that a gynecologist may make to help reduce the risk of breast sagging following pregnancy.

No commentsUltraShape – A Sound Concept for Fat Reduction
UltraShape is advertised as “…a clinically proven, non-surgical, body contouring treatment designed to eliminate undesirable excess fat without resorting to excessive dieting, a rigorous exercise regime or cosmetic surgery.” At first glance, that reads like copy on the cover of a super market check-out magazine. It is not, however, completely void of merit. It is yet another technological approach to the targeted destruction of excess fat cells. (more…)
No commentsLaser Eyelid Surgery
Eyelid surgery has come a long way since it was first introduced, as has most aesthetic procedures. Individuals looking to trim away extra fat that forms in the upper and/or lower part of the eyelid used to do just that. Plastic surgeons that performed eyelid surgery from the 1970s to the 1990s used to literally cut out the extra skin and fat from the eyelids and reconnect the skin to create a tighter, more youthful look. No commentsStudy Examines Mastectomy Patients
Being diagnosed with breast cancer and told you will have to have a mastectomy is a life-changing event. For many, it can be traumatic, scary and devastating. And then the surgery comes, the breast is removed, and the woman is left disfigured.
Studies suggest that many women who undergo a mastectomy suffer from depression and a lowered self esteem following the procedure. Plastic surgeons have made incredible advances in reconstructive surgery in an effort to give these women their self esteem back and to increase their quality of life after the surgery. (more…)
No commentsMalnutrition Can Impact Body Contouring Procedures
Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery is the medical journal published by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). There is a report in the December issue about a surprising negative impact on recovery from body contouring following surgery for massive weight loss – and that is malnutrition.
Bariatric surgery is the general term for a number of surgical options designed to assist in weight loss for obese patients. These include stomach stapling and gastric bypass, both of which significantly reduce nutritional intake. Following the surgery, the patient is on a low calorie diet for a year or more to slowly take off excess weight. The typical diet is a thousand calories a day, which is not nearly enough to sustain an adult. (more…)
No commentsPatients Inspire Others
Imagine waking up every day, looking in the mirror, staring at skin that has been melted away, ears that never fully developed or a mouth so deformed that you cannot speak. Sounds horrific, devastating, tragic?
Now imagine waking up everyday, looking in that same mirror and then going out and changing the world. Sounds impossible, amazing, heroic? For four individuals who were given the 2008 Patients of Courage: Triumph Over Adversity award in a Nov. 1 ceremony, presented by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), it is the simple truth.
