In 1992, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration temporarily banned silicone breast implants from the market as a result of health and safety concerns. After 14 years of intensive clinical trials, researchers found no evidence that silicone breast implants—when they rupture or leak—cause breast cancer or any other serious health complications. In November 2006, the FDA re-approved the use of silicone breast implants for women over the age of 22 who want to undergo breast enhancement, reconstruction surgery, or revision surgery.

Silicone breast implants are made up of a special gel-like substance that look and feel more natural than saline implants or other alternatives, making them the preferred choice for breast augmentation and reconstruction procedures. Experts estimate that thousands of women in the United States will undergo revision surgery to replace their implants with silicone.
