Gynecomastia is a condition where men have an above average amount of breast tissue. The American Academy of Family Physicians says causes may include hormonal changes at puberty, use of certain prescription or illicit drugs or, in some cases, a tumor.
Although there are cosmetic procedures to improve the appearance of gynecomastia, the AAFP says in most instances treatment is not necessary. For 90 percent of boys, gynecomastia will go away in less than three years, though a physician should monitor the condition every few months.
If symptoms include a dimpling of the skin or bloody discharge, immediate treatment should be sought. These symptoms could indicate a more serious condition. For men with persistent gynecomastia despite regular exercise and a healthy diet, cosmetic procedures are available.
