Perfect Implants A Closer Reality

Some women were disappointed with the news that the FDA was going to maintain the silicone gel filled implants ban put into place in 1992, but the future may reveal even more durable, biocompatible, and natural appearing implants. One of the more promising breast implant developments includes a cohesive, silicone gel, leak resistant implant with a consistency described to be like a gummy bear.

The new implant would contain a new type of breast implant shell coating that could result in reduced amounts of inflammation and scarring in the surrounding breast tissue. Cohesive gel breast implants are being studied in the U.S. but have been available in Europe and Brazil already. The benefit of these breast implants is that it carries all the positive aspects of the silicone gel implants, including a more natural feeling without the gel migration that can occur.

The possibility of titanium coated breast implants filled with silicone gel may also be in the future. Since titanium is a more biocompatible metal, researchers are hoping the titanium breast implant would avoid causing toxic or other adverse reaction within the body. By using a coating on the shell, it is hopeful that the implant will be more resistant to infection, will be stronger, and will result in less scarring and capsular contracture.

The popularity of cosmetic surgery procedures continues to escalate. The highly lucrative field is constantly changing, with improvements being made in the aesthetic satisfaction and safety of the procedures like breast implants.
