With the ever-increasing number of cosmetic surgery procedures and a growing acceptance of it, it is easy to forget that plastic surgery used to be used for the reconstructive aspects it provides rather than just for aesthetic purposes. In 2003, 6.2 million reconstructive plastic surgery procedures were performed. This number is not significant in that the numbers from the previous year did not change, but the number of patients that sought better-trained, board-certified surgeons increased by 11%. This increase in safety precautions indicate patients may becoming more aware of the importance in seeking plastic surgeons with the skill and training necessary for a safe and effective procedure.
