A group of doctors and medical professionals have formed the American Cellulite Task Force to educate people on the issue of cellulite – an especially pertinent topic as the focus on beautifying one’s self in the age of plastic surgery has been a large topic.

According to the experts, cellulite affects an estimated 90 percent of women and fewer than five percent of men. The disproportionate number of women affected by cellulite is not fully understood, but it is partly because women have thinner skin that allows the columns of fat that form more evident.

Against popular belief, cellulite will not disappear with weight loss alone, and some people will have liposuction performed in hopes of eliminating treatment resistant fat cells. There are 28 kinds of cellulite, according to the task force, and the group hopes to educate people on how to effectively treat it considering the high number of products that claim they can effectively diminish the appearance of the condition.

If asking doctors, most creams will not be effective for cellulite, nor will exercise alone. Many experts do believe with long-term maintenance the technique called endermologie can diminish the appearance of cellulite. Using a machine that massages and sucks the skin, endermologie has been able to provide pleasing results for many patients.

A Vanderbilt University School of Medicine researcher studied the effects of endermologie on the subcutaneous fat of piglets to see whether the massage technique broke up cellulite, and the results indicated the techniques were effective. Also a notable discovery in the study was the fact that the degree of success the endermologie had was dependent upon the operator. It can be expensive to have endermologie performed, and research from the Vanderbilt study shows the importance of choosing a qualified administrator.

Weight loss and exercise is able to reduce the appearance of cellulite for some individuals, but it can also have no effect on others. Because not everyone will have pleasing results with endermologie, or may not be able to keep up the sessions, researchers are continuing to study other treatment options. A therapy called mesotherapy is being used in Europe, and other administrators believe the use of radiofrequency waves, needles, drugs and electrical stimulation can help diminish the appearance of cellulite.
