2006 Another Big Year in Cosmetic Surgery

Last year, nearly 11.5 million cosmetic procedures were performed in the United States, marking a 446 percent increase since 1997 when the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery began collecting statistics.

The ASAPS released the new statistics last week. According to the data, liposuction ranked first among cosmetic surgical procedures performed in 2006 while Botox topped the list of most sought after non-surgical procedures.

Next to liposuction, other top surgical cosmetic procedures included:

And following Botox, the top non-surgical cosmetic procedures included:

  • Hyaluronic Acid Fillers like Restylane and Hylaform
  • Laser Hair Removal
  • Microdermabrasion
  • Laser Skin Resurfacing

For the first time since 1997, breast augmentation topped the list of cosmetic surgical procedures for women. Also popular among women were lipoplasty, eyelid surgery, tummy tuck, and breast reduction.

Liposuction topped the men's list of most popular surgical procedures but also ranking in the top five were rhinoplasty, eyelid surgery, gynecomastia (male breast reduction), and facelift.
