An innovative study indicates that a compound called oat beta glucan can penetrate the skin to fight wrinkles and fine lines.  For years, doctors have believed that this molecule was too large to penetrate the skin, but researchers are now discovering evidence to the contrary.  Published in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science, this study shows that beta glucan shows promise as an alternative to Botox in the battle against the signs of aging.

The researchers that conducted this study, Dr. Mark Redmond of Ceapro Inc. and colleagues, used a beta glucan tracking dye to determine whether or not the skin had absorbed the glucan.  Beta glucan is a soluble fiber, the properties of which have long been known to relieve pain and itching of minor irritations, smooth the skin, and facilitate wound healing.  This material is absorbed into the skin, say doctors, the same way that water is absorbed by a brick wall: through the cement which binds the bricks.

Scientists found that the glucan is absorbed into the inter-cellular lipid matrix through which it reaches the deeper layers of the skin. The research team has produced photographs of the reduction of wrinkles achieved with this product.  They believe that beta glucan safely produces a measurable effect on the skin.  “We also have indications that a number of applications in cosmetics are in the works to use glucan as the non-invasive alternative to Botox for those who are afraid of needles” says Redmond.

While cosmetic procedures involving this particular molecule still have a way to go before entering mainstream use, this study does point to a recent trend in cosmetic surgery. In response to consumer demand, plastic surgeons and scientists are searching for non-invasive alternatives to current cosmetic procedures. While current options are safe and effective, consumers are in a constant search to find new procedures that do not require recovery time and have little risk of side effects.  This new study on a beta glucan as an alternative to Botox is one example of this trend--- one which may very well produce a safe, effective, and less invasive alternative to Botox.
