A technique originally used in liposuction procedures can now be used for everything from face-lifts to breast augmentations. Tumescent cosmetic surgery, as it is known, avoids the use of general anesthesia by opting instead for local anesthesia, or tumescent anesthesia.

Dr. Edward Lack, a dermatologic cosmetic surgeon, said that tumescent cosmetic surgery offers numerous benefits including faster recovery, less potential for bleeding, and lower cost.

Because the tumescent cosmetic surgery can be performed in an office setting as opposed to in an operating room, the cost of the surgery is significantly reduced. An additional advantage of the technique is that it enables patients to walk right out of the office with almost instantaneous results and minimal bruising.

Perhaps the most significant benefit of tumescent cosmetic surgery is the decreased risk of negative reactions from major anesthesia. In fact, avoiding the use of general anesthesia cuts the risk of death in half.

The procedure involves the injection of a mixture of saltwater, the painkiller lidocaine, and adrenaline or epinephrine to stop the bleeding.

For the person who wants only a minor procedure such as an upper-eyelid job or a neck-lift, the tumescent technique provides patients with the opportunity to undergo such procedures without having to suffer the anxiety of “going under.”
