The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery—the country’s most esteemed association of board certified plastic surgeons who specialize in cosmetic procedures—is celebrating its 40-year anniversary.

“Back in 1967, when John Lewis, MD, a plastic surgeon in Atlanta, GA, and Simon Fredericks, MD, from Houston, TX, planned the organization’s first meeting, cosmetic surgery was viewed very differently than it is today, both by the public and other physicians,” said ASAPS president James Stuzin.

It wasn’t until the late 1970s that cosmetic surgery began gaining credible exposure in medical journals outside of the aesthetic surgery community. Prior to that time, “cosmetic surgery was not considered ‘serious medicine,’” and the ASAPS (then called The Society of Aesthetic Surgeons) offered cosmetic surgeons a forum in which they could discuss their craft and learn new techniques.

Today, the ASAPS still strives to offer its member surgeons a forum for professional growth and recognition and has more than 2,000 member surgeons.
