ASAPS Announces Injectable Treatment Guidelines

The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) announced guidelines yesterday for consumers interested in undergoing cosmetic procedures involving injectable treatments.

The ASAPS guidelines specifically seek to remind consumers that injectable filler treatments are medical procedures that should only be performed by qualified professionals in an appropriate medical setting.

The guidelines come as part of an initiative to counter the growing number of unqualified individuals performing injectable treatment procedures. There have been numerous reports in recent times of people receiving injections with unapproved products ranging from liquid silicone to baby oil appear in the press on a regular basis.

According to the ASAPS, the skin is the second most sensitive organ in the body. Improperly administered injectables can result in various complications including prolonged redness, skin death, scarring, and lumps.

“We need to make patients aware that even though injectables are not ‘surgery' per se, their administration is a medical procedure with risks that depend on the quality of the clinician, clinical setting, and the technique used,” said Dr. James Stuzin, ASAPS president.

Consumer should adhere to the following guidelines when seeking cosmetic injectable treatments:

  • Choose a provider based on quality, not price. Only trained, qualified clinicians should administer injectable products.
  • Select a provider who fully explains the risks and benefits of the product and the procedure.
  • Make sure you disclose any existing medical conditions you have as well as any medications you are taking.
  • Remember that injectable treatments are medical procedures that require the use of sterile instruments in an appropriate setting.
  • Ask for information on the product you're being injected with. Find out if the product is FDA-approved and purchased within the United States. Seek another provider if this information is refused to you.
