Liposuction techniques have come a long way in the last two decades. Once the subject of medical skepticism, liposuction is now the most popular cosmetic procedure in America – with 455,000 procedures performed last year alone.
Commonly used on the hips, thighs, abdomen, and buttocks, liposuction is a surgical procedure that involves the permanent removal of stubborn areas of fat. Innovations in technology are now allowing for more precision in liposuction.
Liposculpture, also called precision or micro-liposuction, is a more technically challenging procedure that targets smaller amounts of fat in areas of the body such as the ankles, back, calves, face, knees, and neck.
Liposuction Guidelines
The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) issued safety guidelines for individuals who are considering liposuction or liposculpture. They include:
- Make certain that the surgeon is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.
- Ask yourself if you have realistic expectations about what liposuction can do for you
- Make sure that your plastic surgeon fully explains the risks and benefits of the procedure
- Disclose any and all medical conditions you have or medications you are taking
- Ensure that the procedure will be performed in a properly accredited or licensed surgical facility.
