Surgeons Exemplify ASPS Excellence
To be a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), a plastic or cosmetic surgeon must have the highest credentials in the field, including a medical degree from an accredited institution and several years of training in general and plastic surgery.
In addition, the ASPS requires post-medical education and training as well as an adherence to a strict code of ethics. With over 6,000 board certified doctors, the ASPS provides plastic surgery patients with a database of highly qualified and committed plastic surgeons. Two of those surgeons are Dr. Mordcai Blau of White Plains, New York and Dr. Stephen Ronan in Danville, California.
Dr. Mordcai Blau
Dr. Mordcai Blau is a surgeon known for his dedication to patients. When asked why he became a plastic surgeon, Dr. Blau said, “I chose the field because I was a sculptor and a painter since my childhood and, because of this fact, I thought I could contribute.”
In addition to his artistic inclinations, Dr. Blau discovered a greater reason for becoming a plastic surgeon: “I also participated in the 1973 Israeli and Arab War as a physician. After seeing dozens of severely burned and wounded young soldiers needing plastic surgery, my thoughts were that performing plastic and reconstructive surgery could be the best way I can use my talent to help humanity.”
Dr. Blau put all of his training, as well as his love for art and people to good use. Approximately 80% of Dr. Blau's practice is devoted to body surgeries—including between 200 and 250 male breast reductions each year. The remaining 20% is devoted to various facial procedures.
According to Dr. Blau, mutual respect for other surgeons is important and honesty in patient relations is a must. “I encourage my patients to see two or three plastic surgeons—for plastic surgery is an art and I want them to be aware and to listen to different ideas and options,” he said.
Dr. Stephen Ronan
Dr. Stephen Ronan is the founder of Blackhawk Surgery Center, where he serves patients in a skilled, professional, and caring manner.
“The two things that set me apart are my technical ability and bedside manner. I perform surgery in double the speed of most plastic surgeons with high repeatability and low complications,” Dr. Ronan once told the ASPS.
Central to Dr. Ronan's practice philosophy is his emphasis on building relationships. In a recent interview, he commented: “Fortunately, I bond well and understand the patients and their concerns/needs. The combination of outstanding clinical outcomes and excellent patient relationships has allowed me to build a large practice in a short amount of time.”
However, Dr. Ronan also gives credit to his staff, which he says is efficient and dedicated to supporting patients. “My staff is amazing! They work hard to accommodate patients with flexibility and their difficult schedules.”
When not performing surgery, Dr. Ronan likes sharing and learning with his peers and often accepts public speaking opportunities. Still, one of his greatest professional rewards is knowing that he has helped make positive changes in his patients' lives.
“Patients often tell me that the surgery has changed their life for the better in many ways other than expected,” he said.
Outstanding Surgeons, Dedicated Patients
Both Dr. Blau and Dr. Ronan are outstanding plastic surgeons, a fact supported by their dedicated following of patients. In fact, Dr. Ronan calls his repeat patients his “greatest credential.”
