Plastic Surgery Gets a Lift From Baby Boomers

Once only reserved for the very famous, or very rich, cosmetic surgery procedures like liposuction, face lifts, tummy tucks, and more are almost as accessible as a department store makeup counter.

Even more, baby boomers who are remarrying, working longer hours, and trying to overhaul their health, are flocking to plastic surgeons more frequently than they get a physical.

“I see my plastic surgeon every six months, like my dentist,” says beauty consultant Tina Goeckel. “It’s [cosmetic surgery] is addictive.”

These finding aren’t surprising when you look at the statistics. Last year alone, over 10 million men and women underwent elective cosmetic surgery procedures, an increase of 38 percent since 2000, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).

The Wide Appeal

We’ve heard that plastic surgery is not only accepted, but also embraced by both men and women of all ages—particularly baby boomers—and ethnic identities. As people get older, they want their faces and bodies to look on the outside how they feel on the inside, rather than depict their chronological age.

Surgeons and experts agree that there is no typical plastic surgery patient. “I’ve worked on priests, police officers, salesmen. A large number of my clients are trial lawyers and others in high-profile jobs,” says plastic surgeon and past president of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgeons William Beeson.

One of the biggest markets for cosmetic procedures are mothers in their 30s and 40s who want a “mommy makeover”—a combination of a breast lift, tummy tuck, and even implants or a butt lift in some cases.

Many look at cosmetic surgery as they would any other routine maintenance regime they undergo. And aficionados of plastic surgery sometimes view it as preventative medicine, going in for Botox treatments before their time, according to plastic surgeon and president of the ASPS Roxanne Guy.
