Cute shoes? Check. Trendy bag? Check. Full lips--yes, full lips are the latest fashion accessory, signifying not only style but also vibrancy and sensuality. But those who've been denied the genetic blessing of sensuous lips need not pout. Injectable fillers and permanent implants can help achieve that inflated look.
Still, lip enhancement isn't all about plumping. It can also be used to create symmetry, “lift” the corners of the mouth, and reduce the appearance of those fine vertical lines that appear with age.
Skill Needed for Optimal Results
When it comes to lip augmentation, achieving good results really depends on the skill of the person performing the procedure. This is especially true in instances where injectable fillers are used.
“As these procedures become less invasive, they rely much more on (the doctor's) artistic skills and ability to sculpt,” said plastic surgeon Dr. Anthony Griffin.
When the results are poor, “it's not the fault of the product, it's not the fault of the procedure. It's the fault of the person doing it because they have no artistic appreciation for what they're doing,” he added.
Consumer Caution
Because lip enhancement is a cosmetic procedure, it should always be done by a board certified plastic surgeon or dermatologist.
“People trivialize these procedures. The fact that you can get a pedicure and your hair cut at the same place that you can get your Botox and your filler, how is that coming across to the consumer? It tells them that it's not a big deal,” said Dr. Vivian Bucay.
