Botox is safe and effective for use, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery said in a statement addressing a recent petition filed by Public Citizen asking the Food and Drug Administration to strengthen warnings on the popular product.
Safety Well-Documented
Public Citizen filed the petition in regard to the risk of injury to patients receiving Botox or an injection of a similar drug for a painful condition known as cervical dystonia. In rare cases, the botulinum toxin was reported as having spread to internal organs.
According to the ASAPS, this risk is already “satisfactorily addressed” on Botox’s current labeling. The society further emphasized that the safety of Botox has been well documented in respected peer-reviewed medical journals.
Nearly Two Decades of Use
Botox has been approved for use since 1989, when the FDA approved it for treating various neurological ailments. In 2002, the FDA added the treatment of frown lines to the approved uses of Botox.
Since it’s initial approval nearly two decades ago, millions of people have received Botox injections.
“As plastic surgeons committed to the safety and welfare of our patients, we have a great deal of interest and significant expertise informing patients about intended use of Botox and other aesthetic products…We believe that the product is safe and efficacious and we recommend its continued use as indicated,” said ASAPS president Foad Nahai, MD.
