Perfect breast symmetry is rare. In fact, the majority of women have some breast asymmetry or irregularity, though it is more pronounced in some women than in others. For those with severe asymmetry, the breasts can be a source of shame and low self-esteem.

Now, a new study shows that surgical treatment for breast asymmetry can boost a woman’s self-esteem and overall quality of life.

The Study
The study, conducted by Brazilian researchers and published in the latest issue of the Aesthetic Surgery Journal, evaluated the impact of breast asymmetry on 35 patients. The patients were asked to complete two surveys measuring

- pain,
- mental health,
- physical health and vitality,
- self-esteem, and
- overall quality of life

—among other things. The surveys were administered prior to surgery and then three and six months after surgery. Researchers observed a significant improvement in all categories, including self-esteem.

“These findings underscore the positive effect that surgical treatment can have on patients with breast asymmetry. The results of such surgery go far beyond aesthetics, more importantly improving the self-esteem and quality of life of these patients,” said Dr. Foad Nahai, plastic surgeon and associate editor of ASJ.
