More than two million American women currently have breast implants, and another 350,000 are expected to get them this year. With so many women seeking to boost their breast size, the question arises: Does size really matter?

A new study seems to suggest that it does. In fact, the study shows that breast enhancement might actually boost self-esteem and increase sexuality.

The Research

Cynthia Figueroa-Haas, a clinical assistant professor at the University of Florida’s College of Nursing, recently conducted the study, which involved 84 women between the ages of 21 and 57.

Study participants were asked to fill out pre- and post-operative questionnaires to assess their perceptions of self-esteem and sexuality. The assessments were made using two widely accepted scientific scales: the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale and the Female Sexual Function Index.

According to the findings, the women’s average self-esteem score increased by more than 4 points—from 20.7 to 24.9 on the 30-poing Rosenberg scale. Similarly, their average sexual function score increased from 27.2 to 31.4 on the 36-point index.

The women specifically reported significant increases in sexual desire (78.6 percent), arousal (81 percent), and satisfaction (57 percent).

Not a Cure-all

Despite these positive results, Figueroa-Haas warned that plastic surgery should not be viewed as a cure for self-esteem issues.

“There may be patients who will never be satisfied with their bodies no matter how much surgery they receive or feel that their life will completely change after plastic surgery. These are not ideal candidates for surgery and should seek further counseling to address their underlying psychological issues,” she said.

The ideal candidate for cosmetic plastic surgery are those “who seek improvements in certain physical areas” and have realistic expectations.
