Breast augmentation patients can be best prepared after surgery by being equipped with the right bras for their new look. Breast compression garments, wraps, and the like are required by plastic surgeons for a specified time period after breast surgery because of several reasons, including:

Bras purchased after compression garment requirements expire warrant careful consideration. Breast augmentation patients’ breasts tend to be wider than real breasts. There is often a wider gap in the cleavage as well. In fact, breast implants tend to project outward more than real breasts. Add this to the fact that breast implants require ongoing support to maintain positioning; it makes sense that bra styles that were worn prior to surgery may not be the same styles worn after surgery.

Breast augmentation patients may be familiar with the old adage- no underwires. Plastic surgeons feel that underwires impede the healing process for patients with inframammary incisions whereby the underwire rests on the incision under the crease of the breast. Secondly, an underwire break and puncture of the implant results in a rupture leading to replacement of the implant. Though, the odds are slim that this will occur, plastic surgeons are usually specific when discussing the types of bras that should be worn after recovery from breast augmentation surgery, including more than the underwire contention.

Breast implants require support and reinforcement for correct positioning in years to come. In fact, it is important to seek out bras that will help hold positioning of breast implants to prevent excessive sagging or malpositioning over time.  Weather you decide on regular, front clasp, halter, criss-cross, strapless bars, check with the manufacturer to be certain the bra is suitable for breast implants. Though, this information cannot replace your plastic surgeon’s recommendation. It is important to discuss bra options with your plastic surgeon after surgery.
