Buttock Augmentation: The New Trend In Plastic Surgery

An appreciation of round bottoms has traditionally been attributed to African-American and Latino cultures. Nowadays, however, the emphasized backside is an increasingly popular feature among all cultures – especially Caucasians.

In recent years, buttock augmentation procedures have soared. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the number of patients undergoing buttock augmentations increased 285 percent from 2002 to 2005.

“What's happened is Caucasians now are feeling more and more pressure because it just looks so odd not to have a buttocks. And of course, there is pressure on people of color because they feel like they should have one,” said Anthony Griffin, the Beverly Hills plastic surgeon who pioneered the Brazilian butt life a decade ago.

Even though the popularity of the butt has become more widespread, there are still cultural differences, said Griffin. For instance, black women tend to want more emphasis on the buttocks while white women want less. Asian women and Latinas tend to fall somewhere in the middle.

And with the changing tide, men are more willing than ever to confess their fondness of the backside, Griffin said. “I do like women who are voluptuous. I think it's a pendulum. We are embracing our differences more than we did before,” said John Henry, a 28-year-old white man.

Some speculate that the influence of popular culture, particularly hip-hop videos and celebrities like J.Lo, Beyonce, and most recently Jessica Simpson as Daisy Duke has contributed to the growing appreciation of the derriere.

Regardless of the origin of this growing trend, it appears that the butt is rapidly replacing breasts as the new point of emphasis, the new “new thing.”
