Research has shown that plastic surgery is normally safe; however, like any operation, having plastic surgery, whether for cosmetic reasons or not, can be risky.
After singer, Kayne West’s mother died last Saturday after undergoing surgery and investigations pointed fingers at her surgeon, many are thinking twice about going under the knife.
Surgery Safe According to Statistics
A study that was published in a 2004 issue of the Journal of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery found that complications from tummy tucks, breast enlargements and reductions, liposuction and other cosmetic fixes are rare.
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, an estimated 11 million endured a cosmetic procedure in the U.S. last year.
Out of 411, 670 surgeries that were analyzed at certified office-based surgery centers over a two-year period, researchers found that complications only occurred in 299 cases.
Death reportedly occurred in one in 58,810 cases.
Minimizing Risks
“Surgery is still surgery. There is always some risk,” explains Dr. Richard D’Amico, the president of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
Some complications that can occur include:
· Bruises
· Infections
· Heart Problems
· Respiratory Problems
In order to minimize risks, experts recommend finding a well-trained surgeon and getting an extensive checkup before surgery to ensure that no existing health problems will interfere with the end results.
