As cosmetic procedures increase in popularity, there is a growing misconception that non-surgical means non-medical. Unfortunately, this misconception has led to potentially dangerous consumer complacency with regard nonsurgical cosmetic procedures.
Ancillary procedures such as skin resurfacing and Botox, while technically nonsurgical, are in fact medical procedures and should only be performed in an appropriate facility under the guidance of a credentialed and trained physician.
Other common nonsurgical procedures include:
- Chemical skin peels
- Injectable treatments
- Laser hair removal
- Laser treatment of veins
- Skin resurfacing
To help combat consumer complacency and ensure safety, the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery lists the following guidelines for those considering nonsurgical procedures:
- Provide the physician who will perform the procedure with a complete medical history to avoid possible allergic reactions and to identify any underlying risk factors
- Explore alternatives with the physician during the pre-consultation visit
- Make sure to discuss the risks and benefits of the procedure with the physician
- Find out where the procedure will be performed. All medical procedures should be performed in a safe and sanitary environment using only sterile equipment
- Ask about emergency plans in case of an unforeseen consequence
- Determine if the physician offers follow-up care, which is necessary to ensure the best results
