According to various statistics, somewhere between 80 and 95 percent of all women suffer from cellulite—fat deposits that create a dimply, uneven appearance in the skin, particularly around the buttocks and thighs. While there is currently no cure for cellulite, researchers are optimistic about a new cosmetic treatment.

At a recent meeting of the American Society of Plastic Surgery in San Francisco, researchers presented a study showing that injections of an enzyme that breaks down collagen may help eliminate cellulite dimples.

The study involved 10 women who were injected with the collagenase enzyme. Within a day of treatment, the women experienced a 77 percent reduction in cellulite—a fact the researchers noted could have been partly caused by swelling.

Even after six months, the results of the treatments were still evident. Side effects, which included mild swelling and soreness and bruising at the injection sites, lasted for about a week or two.

Researchers said they were excited about the results but added that further studies and long-term follow-up are necessary to verify the findings.
