The American Society for Dermatologic Surgery announced the approval of a new dermal filler, Radiesse™, which it says is particularly useful in the treatment of nasolabial folds and other depressed areas of the face.

“Radiesse gives dermasurgeons another effective non-surgical tool to treat the deepest wrinkles and provide optimal facial contouring. It is an excellent complement to the existing fillers available to us and an important advancement in facial rejuvenation,” said ASDS President-Elect Alastair Carruthers

An Option for HIV Patients

According to facial cosmetic surgeons, Radiesse also offers those afflicted with HIV an option for treating lipoatrophy, a disfiguring condition marked by sunken cheeks and hollow eyes. Also known as facial wasting, lipoatrophy often plagues HIV patients socially and psychologically.

“This is an important step for the many people with deep facial wrinkles and those diagnosed with HIV who suffer from facial wasting. It will help bring more fullness, shape and contour to their faces,” said ASDS President Gary D. Monheit.

About Radiesse

Radiesse is an injectable gel composed of a biocompatible, biodegradable synthetic substance known as Calcium Hydroxylapatite – a material similar to that naturally found in bones.

As with all dermal fillers, Radiesse should only be injected under the supervision of a trained and skilled surgeon.

“There is a tendency for doctors with no cosmetic training and even non-physicians to jump on the bandwagon. However, patients should be aware that aesthetic results with soft tissue fillers are skill-dependent,” said Dr. Monheit.
