The operating room is the last place you'd find expensive gems, but a new scalpel being used by plastic surgeons—mostly in cosmetic eye surgery—is a diamond in the rough.
The innovative diamond laser scalpel consists of a perfect edge with no irregularities, offering patients a precise cut. Laser energy is emitted directly through the diamond blade that is nearly 40 times sharper than a traditional steel scalpel.
“We can make a cut and save time by making a very sharp instantaneous cut and not having to deal with the bleeding that slows us down during the operative time,” said plastic surgeon Dr. Scott B. Wells. “More importantly, we get such a clean cut that really the healing is much quicker than would be expected with traditional scalpel technique.”
Cosmetic eye procedures performed with the diamond scalpel are shown to minimize bruising and swelling, thus allowing patients to resume their regular activities almost immediately.
