Disposable Liposuction Instrument Promotes Safer Surgery

A new disposable cannula, the instrument used in liposuction procedures, is now being used by plastic surgeons across the country to help reduce the risk of infection caused by cross-contamination.

Cannulas are the instruments used to harvest, transfer, and/or re-inject fat during liposuction surgery. The disposable cannula was designed to solve contamination issues that can sometimes arise out of the reuse of surgical instruments during these procedures.

Several different types of disposable cannulas have been developed to meet the needs of various liposuction techniques, including a minimally invasive micro-cannula and a series of five more adaptable models.

According to instrument maker Tulip BioMed, the new cannulas are lubricated to facilitate the extraction process and decrease cell trauma. The cannulas are also designed, the company says, to minimize bruising and recovery time.

“Good surgeons are always looking for better and safer instrumentation. Tulip's blunt tip disposable cannulas will us perform safer surgeries with more predictable results and are convenient for the O.R. (operating room) staff,” said plastic surgeon, J. William Little.
