According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons minorities account for 23 percent of plastic surgery patients, a number that has nearly doubled since 2002.

Researchers believe this recent growth in the desire for plastic surgery among minorities is due to the increased acceptance within the groups and the larger number of minority specialist who ethnic patients regard as more in tune with their needs.

Why the Growth?

Even though white women still dominate the plastic surgery market, the number of black, Hispanic, and Asian patients has risen dramatically in the past five years.

Many of these patients are seeking out cosmetic surgery in order to enhance their racial or ethnic characteristics, while others are getting nose jobs and laser hair removal.

Surgery to create a crease in the eyelid to widen the eye is most popular among Asian women and breast reductions are the most desired with black women.

This rise is most evident in Washington where the diverse population and high levels of disposable income with some minority groups account for this desire.

Advances in Plastic Surgery

The advances in plastic surgery technology are also due credit for the growing popularity with procedures among those of different ethnic backgrounds.

For instance, first generation lasers used to be designed for light skin and dark hair and the risks of scarring dark or tanner skin was greater. But now, newer lasers can treat African and Indian skin safely and more effectively.

Advances in people’s general attitude in minority communities have also changed and is reflected in this upward trend.

“There really was a sense of taboo, that if you were looking at plastic surgery you were seen as being ashamed of your ethnicity,” says Chicago plastic surgeon Julian W. Few, “ I’ve seen a tremendous swing.”
