Husband and wife Dale "Fritz" and Christy Baringer of Le Sueur, Minnesota underwent major physical changes on the ABC reality TV show "Extreme Makeover" two and a half years ago, and they maintain that although the cosmetic surgery and other refinements obliged them to make some significant emotional adjustments, they're quite happy with the long-term results.

More Confidence

They report that they're more personable and confident, and that their lives were permanently changed by their new appearances. Fritz was a carpenter before the show; now he's found the self-confidence to be a salesman. Christy now sells makeup part time. Regarding their new look, she said, "It took a bit of getting used to." The pair still get attention from strangers who have seen the cable reruns of the show, which first aired in March 2005. They've also had a few experiences where looking their best has made people act "nicer" toward them.

A Challenge to Deal With

Strangely enough, their good fortune was challenged about a year and a half after the show was aired, when Fritz was kicked in the face by one of the 15 horses they keep on their farm. His jaw was broken, and his teeth, so carefully crafted on the Extreme Makeover episode, were mostly kicked in; two teeth were sent flying. His chin implant was threatened by the blow, but six hours of cosmetic surgery managed to save the implant and his teeth.

The Benefits Are Maintained

Christy's makeover included teeth whitening, hair styling, and a new diet that shed significant pounds for her. She has maintained all the benefits. Fritz and Christy are still receiving compliments from people they run into, and despite their earlier conflicting feelings about beauty being "on the inside," they report that they're still very glad that they took the steps to making the most of their appearance.
