Eyelash Transplants: The New Must-Have Procedure?

Long, lush lashes represent one of the most coveted beauty features. Women across the globe sometimes take painstaking measures to achieve thick, sweeping eyelashes – gluing, curling, and even dying them to enhance their appearance.

Now, plastic surgeons are using hair transplant techniques similar to those used on balding men to help women achieve amazing lashes – permanently. “This is a brand new procedure for the general public (and) it is going to explode,” said Dr. Alan Bauman, one of the leading supporters of eyelash transplant surgery.

Previously, the procedure had been confined to burn victims or patients with congenital eye defects. Today, nearly 80 percent of eye transplant procedures are performed for purely cosmetic purposes.

“Longer, thicker lashes are an ubiquitous sign of beauty. Eyelash transplantation does for the eyes what breast augmentation does for the figure,” said Dr. Bauman.

Using the “plug and sew” technique, the surgeon makes a small incision at the back of the scalp and removes anywhere from 30 to 40 hair follicles. Once removed, the follicles are sewn individually onto the eyelids.

Because real human hair is used for the procedure, the transplanted eyelashes will continue to grow as the hair did when it was on the head and will thus require regular trimming.

The procedure involves only light sedation and local anesthesia and costs approximately $3,000 per eye.
