Despite new laser technologies and innovative injectable filler products that can postpone the need for a facelift, plastic surgeons are saying it’s too soon to write the surgical procedure off altogether. Sometimes, surgeons say, surgery is the best option for achieving the patient’s desired results.
“With the introduction of injectable fillers and Botox, many people over 45 believe they can achieve the same results as a facelift without surgery,” said Dr. Richard D’Amico, President-elect of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
“However, as we get older our brow lines, jowls and wrinkles can become too deep for an injectable to smooth out. When a patient’s degree of facial aging is such that an injectable cannot achieve the desired result, surgery is the next natural progression,” he added.
While surgery is sometimes the better option, laser treatments and injectable fillers can help patients maintain results.
“After a facelift, fillers and Botox are key adjuncts to help restore volume and maintain surgical improvements for many more years,” D’Amico said.
ASPS member surgeon Dr. Bahaman Guyuron recommends that cosmetic procedures be tailored to fit the needs of the patient—whether that means surgery, minimally invasive procedures, or some combination of both.
More than 100,000 Americans over age 40 had a facelift last year. It was the second most popular procedure among women and men over the age of 55.
