Facial harmony essential in cosmetic surgery

We all know someone who we consider to have a big nose.  If we stop to think about what makes his or her nose look big, we might find that it is not just a humped bridge or a distinctive tip of the nose.  Other features of the face, such as thin lips or a recessed chin, may also be responsible for the look of a big nose.  Rather than thinking of it as a large nose, we may come to perceive the facial features as out of balance with one another.  This is where cosmetic surgery’s goal of facial harmony comes into play.

Facial harmony is the balance of all facial features and their proportions.  Each feature of the face and head contribute to one’s unique appearance.  When one or more of these features is out of balance with the overall facial appearance, cosmetic surgery can be an excellent way to restore facial harmony and improve one’s appearance.  Rather than trying to get celebrity eyes or lips, focusing on achieving facial harmony is the best way to improve one’s appearance through facial plastic surgery.

Achieving facial harmony requires the skill of a qualified and experienced plastic surgeon that focuses on your unique facial features.  A surgeon must understand your aesthetic goals and carefully evaluate your features before recommending one or more cosmetic procedures.  You may come in thinking that a rhinoplasty (nose job) will improve your appearance, but may find that chin augmentation or lip enhancement may also drastically improve your appearance.  To achieve facial harmony, a surgeon may also recommend cheek or jaw augmentation, eyelid surgery, ear surgery, or a face lift

It is wise to ask your selected surgeon to show you before-and-after pictures of his/her previous patients.  S/he should also be able to describe the ways in which they will adapt your desired procedure to achieve facial harmony for you.   If they show you patient pictures where every nose, set of lips, and eyes look the same, they may not be able to help you achieve individualized facial harmony.
