A new survey by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons reveals that despite women's confusion about facial injectables, the majority would prefer them to more invasive surgical treatments.

The survey, conducted by market research firm, Harris Interactive®, involved almost 800 women between the ages of 35 and 69 in the United States. Most participants revealed they want to look 13 years younger than they are, and over 40 percent were very worried about wrinkles and saggy skin and believed facial injectables such as Botox and dermal fillers were the solution.

Expectations of Injectables

Nearly 80 percent of the women in the survey had high expectations of minimally-invasive cosmetic facial procedures and believed injectables would leave them looking younger, natural, and more refreshed.

Seven out of 10 participants thought the treatments would erase wrinkles, smooth out lines and folds in the skin, and rejuvenate their appearance.

While more and more women are opting to undergo minimally-invasive procedures—8.5 million procedures performed last year, an increase of 53 percent since 2000—most are still confused or unsure about what the procedures entail.

Confusion Over Facial Injectables

The survey found that 21 percent of the participants believe that using facial injectables will banish the need for any future face-lifts, an assumptions that is rarely true. Furthermore, one-third of women didn't know how long results usually last or whether the treatments were high or low risk.

“ASPS reported earlier this year how patients are choosing the needle over the knife for minimally-invasive procedures,” said ASPS president Roxanne Guy, MD. “These survey findings underscore that point. But the findings also illustrate that women are confused. We need to continue to educate consumers about treatment options so they can make good choices.”
