For years, women have tweezed, plucked, shaved, waxed, and dyed the hair above their eyes to achieve the chic look of the razor-thin, arched eyebrow. Now, it seems as though the days of the barely there eyebrow are rapidly receding into the past.
“I would have to say that eyebrows are getting thicker. Not in a 1980s, Brooke Shields way, and certainly unibrows are still out, but the new style is a more natural, fuller look,” said professional make-up artist and modeling coach Crystal Miller.
Hair Transplants for Eyebrows
Women who are looking to augment eyebrows damaged by years of torturous tweezing are beginning to seek out alternative treatments, including transplantation. Long used by men with thinning hair, transplantation is nowadays being used to plump up eyebrows.
“As much as hair loss bothers people in the scalp, it seems that the thing you recognize in the mirror involves your eyebrows,” said Dr. Ken Washenik, who performs the procedure.
The procedure involves the surgical removal of hair from the back of the head. Once removed, the hair is then “planted” where it's needed. After several months, the transplanted hair is indistinguishable from the rest of the eyebrows with one exception.
Because the hair behaves like it did when it was on the scalp, it will continue to grow even when transplanted to the face. Thus, it usually requires trimming every three to four days.
Still, this is hardly a deterrent for women wanting to keep up with the latest beauty trends, especially since eyebrows add much to the appearance of one's face.
Hair transplantation procedures typically cost anywhere from $3,000 to $5,000. To learn more or to schedule a consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon near you, please contact us .
