Gummy bear implants could be the next big thing for breast implants
Mentor Corp. and Inamed Corp. are waiting for the Food and Drug Administration’s decision on whether their cohesive silicone breast implants will be allowed for sale on the U.S. market.
Both companies sell saline filled implants already, but the cohesive silicone breast implants have been described as having a more natural feel, compared to the consistency of a gummy bear.
Mentor and Inamed are working on third and fourth generation breast implants considered safer than silicone implants that can maintain its form and does not leak. Silicone breast implants were banned in the U.S. in 1991 for general use.
Since then, saline implants have been used, making up three-quarters of the U.S. implant market, but the approval of the cohesive silicone filled implants could drastically change the breast implant market dynamic. Most surgeons and patients generally favored the look and feel of silicone breast implants, and ever since the product’s removal from the market the subject has continued to be controversial.
