Advances for Permanent Hair Removal
The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery reports that in 2006 1.4 million men and women underwent laser hair removal procedures in the U.S.
For those who are forced to deal with unwanted hair and are tired of tedious routines such as plucking, shaving and waxing, long-term hair removal is becoming a popular option.
Laser Hair Removal
Over the last few years laser hair removal has been nearly perfected which is part of the reason so many Americans are opting to undergo the treatment.
“Today, the majority of laser hair removal procedures are safe, virtually painless, take less than 20 minutes and cause minimal, if any, side effects,” says Joshua Fox, MD, founder of Advanced Dermatology and spokesman for the American Academy of Dermatology.
Method Options
With the consistently changing advances in hair removal technology patients are often left wondering which method is right for them.
Dr. Fox explains, “The determination is made simply by weighing the specific needs and goals of the patient with the medical history and other physical criteria.”
“Today, the majority of laser hair removal procedures are safe, virtually painless, take less than 20 minutes and cause minimal, if any, side effects,” says Dr. Fox. However, the key in experiencing a successful procedure depends upon choosing the right laser or non-laser for each individual patient.
“Short Pulsed Alexandrite”
These types of lasers are among the most common used for permanent hair removal.
During this procedure the beam penetrates the skin at a longer wavelength than with some other lasers. The top layer of skin is less likely to be affected by this beam as a result. Most Alexandrite lasers also include cooling mechanisms that chill the surface of the skin for an added protection.
“Long Pulsed Nd:YAG”
These lasers are often used on patients with darker skin and the wavelength of the laser beam is even longer than the Alexandrite laser.
“Intense Pulsed Light”
These treatments use a less intense light source than the lasers. Ideal for those with more sensitive skin, they are gentler to the epidermis.
Electro-Optical Surgery (ELOS)
This technology uses a combination of radiofrequency and intense pulsed light energies for long-term loss of light colored hair, which is known as being especially resistant to laser treatments.
What to Consider
According to Dr. Fox, those who are considering any long term hair removal procedure should first consult a dermatologist to find out about the safest, most appropriate and most satisfying outcome.
“A dermatologist can help patients determine, based on skin type, hair type and sensitivity issues, which is the best approach, can assist patients in preparing for the procedure and their recovery, and provide the deepest level expertise,” explains Fox.
