As the number of obesity cases in the country continues to increase, the numbers of bariatric surgeries being performed have also been on the rise.

However, surgeons began noticing that an alarming number of these surgeries started to become less effective long-term and patients were beginning to gain weight again, even after the procedure.

New Procedure Performed

Surgeons at the Ohio State University Medical Center first performed the incisionless procedure.

This technique was developed to be performed following bariatric bypass surgery to help prevent the high rate of complications that are occurring with the surgery.

The technique has been FDA approved.

Advantages of the New Device

Some advantages of the new device known as StomaphyX, are:

  • No incisions or scars
  • Less complications than the traditional revisional bypass surgery
  • Quicker recovery time
  • Minimal pain

How the Procedure Works

In the surgery, a flexible endoscope, which carries a fiber-optic camera and tubular surgical tool, is passed through the mouth and into the stomach.

The tissue of the stomach is suctioned into this tube while fasteners are place throughout the stomach to create pleats within the tissue and reduce the size of the stomach's pouch.
