Innie Belly Buttons: A New Cosmetic Trend?
Some call it a belly button, others a navel or an umbilicus. It's that tiny area just above the waist that forms when the umbilical cord is cut after birth. Technically a scar, the way it heals determines whether or not a person has an innie or an outtie.
As far as aesthetic trends go, nowadays innies are in and outties are out. Although not a common surgery, some people are opting to undergo a cosmetic procedure known as umbilicoplasty to have their outties turned in.
For Aesthetic Appeal
According to plastic surgeon Michael Bermant, who has been reconstructing navels for more than three decades, the procedure is more common among women and particularly popular just prior to swimsuit season.
“Most requests come as the season comes closer to having the belly button exposed,” said Bermant.
Umbilicoplasties may also be done for medical reasons such as hernia. However, most of the Bermant's patients say they “can't stand the way their belly buttons look” and have the procedure for purely cosmetic reasons. In fact, umbilicoplasties are frequently performed during tummy tuck procedures.
A routine umbilicoplasty procedure generally takes between 90 minutes and three hours and costs approximately $4,000. Like any surgical procedure, umbilicoplasties do carry some risks, including bleeding and infection.
