A recent study published in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery found that as we age, the lower jaw line continues to grow and becomes squarer.

Study Takes a Closer Look at the Jaw

Researchers studied radiographic images of 16 patients, all of which were taken when they were 16-years-old.

They also studied images taken later in life, with the mean age being 56-years-old.

The study concluded that a person’s jaw line can be extremely influential on how old they look as they get older.

“The shape of the lower jaw plays an important role in the perception of youth and can be a tell-tale sign of someone’s age,” explains Joel Pessa, ASPS Member Surgeon and co-author of the study.

“Across the board in many cultures, the smaller and more curved a man or woman’s jaw line, the younger looking they appear.

Surgeries Help Patients Gain Youthful Appearance

The researchers found that soft-tissue procedures, such as facelifts or chin augmentation, can create an illusion of a smaller jaw line.

According to statistics from the ASPS, more than 104,000 facelifts were performed in 2006.
