A rapidly increasing number of New Orleans residents who survived the devastating effects of Hurricane Katrina are seeking plastic surgery in an effort to renew and rejuvenate their appearance as they rebuild their lives.

Many doctors claim the soaring number of plastic surgery procedures performed in New Orleans in the last couple of years is a result of the increase in disposable income among hurricane survivors who have gotten rid of damaged property, invested in government loan options, and taken storm deductions from federal taxes.

Other plastic surgeons, however, believe that post-Katrina patients are just looking for a way to boost their self-esteem and improve the quality of their lives after such devastation. While survivors may have little control over their dreary landscape, they can work on their appearance to take back some of that control.

Furthermore, many Katrina patients see plastic surgery as a way to make a new start and put the trauma of the hurricane completely behind them

“There is so much devastation. Everything around you looks so bad. With so much negativity, this is a little bit of a positive,” said Vita Elmer, a New Orleans resident who began getting Botox injections after the storm to feel better amid the ruin. She said that for her, cosmetic surgery offers a “temporary pick-me-up.”
