Laser Hair Removal: Don't Get Burned

Millions of people are opting for laser hair removal as an alternative to older, more time consuming methods of hair removal such as shaving and waxing. Perhaps the primary reason for choosing laser hair removal, however, is that it offers something that these older methods cannot – silky smooth skin that lasts.

In recent years, laser hair removal procedures have been steadily gaining popularity among those looking for a permanent remedy for getting rid of unwanted, often unsightly, hair. But laser hair removal is more than just “zapping” unwanted hair, according to Dr. Carolyn Jacob.

A member of the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, Dr. Jacob reminds consumers that laser hair removal is a medical procedure with potentially harmful risks. To avoid complications, she recommends consumers consider the following questions before undergoing the procedure:

  • Will a physician or skilled technician under the supervision of a physician be performing the procedure?
  • Have you recently tanned? Tanning before or after laser hair removal can cause burns and skin discoloration.
  • Has the physician thoroughly explained the procedure, including risks and benefits as well as the type of laser that will be used?
  • If you have dark skin, will the physician perform a test spot treatment prior to the procedure?

Laser hair removal reduces hair growth through a series of treatments, which are usually performed at six to eight week intervals. To learn more about laser hair removal or other cosmetic procedures, or to find a board certified plastic surgeon near you, please contact us .
