The Food and Drug Administration has approved a new technology for the treatment of scars. Reliant Technologies will be releasing its “Fraxel Laser” to physicians around the nation for the treatment of facial scars.
The laser is designed to reduce and eliminate stubborn facial scarring that is unresponsive to traditional topical scar treatments. The laser technology has also been found to be helpful for the treatment of acne and surgical scarring.
“A successful treatment outcome requires both the removal of damaged epidermal (surface) tissue and the stimulation of collagen remodeling in the dermal component of acne and surgical scars in order to improve collagen fiber reorganization, surface texture and skin tone,” commented Dr. Zakia Rahman of Stanford University and current medical director of the Fraxel Laser Clinic.
Reliant Technologies conducted trial studies on a group of 40 patients who together had 53 facial scars. The patients were treated with the Fraxel Laser treatment between three and five times and the results were reviewed at one and three month intervals.
According to researchers and independent investigators of the study, 92 percent of the trial patients exhibited considerable improvement in the appearance of their scarring after several months of the treatment. No serious side effects were reported or observed from the study’s patients.
“The beauty of the Fraxel Laser is its unrivalled ability to repair a range of facial scars and promote collagen growth in patients of all skin types,” says Dr. Vic Narukar, a dermatology laser expert.
“Using millions of tiny microscopic laser spots surrounded by islands of healthy tissue, the new Fraxel Laser produces optimal results without the downtime and complications associated with ablative lasers and other destructive techniques,” he adds.
The Fraxel Laser can be used for the treatment sun spots, age spots, skin discoloration, periorbital wrinkles, soft tissue coagulation, melasma, acne and other scarring.
