Lip Augmentation: Not All Fillers Are Created Equal

Lip augmentation and rejuvenation procedures are in high demand, according the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. More and more people are seeking treatment with injectable fillers, not just to achieve plumper, sexier lips but also to combat aging around the mouth.

“Numerous injectable fillers have entered the market over the last five years, giving patients a number of options for fuller, younger lips,” said ASPS member, Dr. Miles Graivier.

He warns, however, that not all injectable fillers are created equal and some can even cause long-term damage or complications.

According to Dr. Graivier, patients “need to be aware of the risks and benefits of these products. Some fillers carry a higher risk of complication depending upon where they are injected, which can lead to unsatisfactory results.”

Injectable fillers can be used to augment or rejuvenate various areas around the mouth, including laugh lines, lipstick lines, and the inner lip.

Dr. Graivier said that semi-permanent fillers are best for filling in laugh lines and redefining the edge of the lips. When injected into the inner lip, semi-permanent fillers can cause poor results such as visible lumping. For inner lips, hyaluronic acid fillers are best because they carry minimal risks.

“Lip augmentation, combined with rejuvenation of surrounding problem areas like laugh lines, can really remove years from your appearance. The key is using the appropriate filler in the correct area,” he said.
