Preserving The Beauty of Your Lips
Lips are one of the most prominent features on the face, and their beauty is often described in songs, poems and books or highlighted visually in film, television and magazines. Because lips are so visible by others, it’s natural for us to feel self-conscious about how they look.
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, demand for lip augmentation is on the rise.
“Numerous injectable fillers have entered the market over the last 5 years giving patients a number of options for fuller, younger lips,” said Miles Graivier, MD, ASPS member and highly regarded plastic surgeon.
Why Lip Augmentation?
As we get older, the fat and muscle in our lips begin to droop and flatten out. There are wrinkles in the lips, the upper lip gets longer and the lower lip just drops. Can we fight the aging process?
To a certain extent, yes. Thousands of patients a year visit their favorite plastic surgeon to receive some sort of treatment to enhance the look of their lips and feel better about their appearance.
Lip Augmentation
According to the ASPS, lip augmentation procedures use a variety of materials to create fuller-looking lips. Lip augmentation, by way of dermal fillers, fat transfers, or the placement of lip transplants, can usually be completed in the doctor’s office.
Most qualified plastic surgeons use several different methods to augment the lips. Lips can be injected with collagen or through fat grafting. Both collagen and fat can be absorbed by the body, so many treatments may be necessary for maintenance over a long period of time.
With the implant process, a synthetic or natural biocompatible material will be placed in the patient’s lip, or fat will be taken from another part of the patient’s body, prepared and injected into the lips for a fuller effect.
Given all the products on the market available, consulting a qualified plastic surgeon is always in the patient’s best interest.
Preparing for Lip Augmentation
Most of these procedures can be completed right in the doctor’s office with local anesthesia. In preparation for a lip augmentation procedure, you should:
- Enlist someone to drive you to and from your appointment
- Wear comfortable clothing
- Stop smoking
- Avoid taking aspirin or other painkillers
- Make sure you don’t have any cold sores or other infections that might interfere with the procedure
The bottom line: Kissing, singing, eating, talking, and smiling represent just some of the positive ways we use our lips, so we should do what we can to make sure they’re in the best shape possible!
