Liposuction, while not a means for shedding pounds, is an effective way to combat stubborn areas of fat that don't respond well to diet and exercise. Bodies, however, are unique. Not everyone accumulates fat in the same areas of the body.

Fortunately, liposuction procedures can be customized according to body type. The following are body specific guidelines to consider when seeking liposuction to whittle down stubborn areas of fat:

  • Pear shape – One of the more common body types, pear-shaped women tend to carry the bulk of their weight below the waist, particularly in the hips, thighs, buttocks, knees, and ankles. Liposuction works well for each of these areas. However, in cases where the skin is excessively loose or uneven, individuals may wish to consider a lower-body lift.
  • Apple shape – Another common body type is the apple shape. Women with an apple shape tend to carry their weight in the middle, having slender legs and arms. Liposuction can effectively help those with an apple shape trim fatty areas around the tummy, buttocks, and hips.
  • Slender – Thin women are not necessarily immune to accumulating pockets of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise. Slender women are often prone to small pockets of fat in the inner thigh area as well as around the navel. Liposculpture, also called precision, selective, or micro-liposuction is typically ideal for slender individuals with tiny but stubborn areas of fat.
  • Hourglass – Women with hourglass figures tend to have exaggerated curves that liposuction can help bring back into proportion with the rest of the body, especially the upper arms, hips, and inner thighs.
  • Athletic – Even athletic bodies are susceptible to resistant pockets of fat. Liposuction, particularly liposculpture, can help individuals with athletic body types even out troublesome bulges on the backs, thighs, upper arms, and knees.
