A new procedure is gaining popularity at cosmetic surgery centers across the nation — It’s called lipotherapy and it enables patients to get rid of frustrating pockets of fat without the invasive surgery of liposuction.

“I felt that this was the best option for me as far as minimal downtime and not have my appearance changed severely so that it was obvious to everyone that I knew that something drastic had been done. I didn’t want drastic, I just wanted better,” said Lipotherapy patient Marianne Nicholas.

Minimally Invasive

The procedure is like liposuction in it can only be used to target localized areas of fat that don’t respond well to diet and exercise. Unlike traditional liposuction, however, fat cells are not vacuumed out. Instead, a medicated solution is injected to make fat cells die.

Some physicians use needles to inject the solution, whereas others prefer to use injection guns. According to one physician, lipotherapy is “technique dependent” and consequently results will vary from doctor to doctor.

“I feel the same way I did when I was 30. I have the same energy level, the same enthusiasm, that was missing,” said Nicholas after having had the procedure.

When performed by a skilled practitioner, the procedure has minimal side effects including swelling, bruising, or itching. Also, lipotherapy is not yet approved by the Food and Drug Administration, but it has been approved for use in France for over 10 years.
