Implants and injections are the current standard for lip enhancement procedures, which often tend to focus primarily on augmenting the appearance of the upper lip. Now, a new procedure known as a lower lip lift is helping patients reverse the effects of gravity and achieve a more youthful facial appearance.

The lower lip, although frequently overlooked, actually plays a significant role in the way a person’s face ages. At a young age, the lips reveal the upper teeth and conceal the lower ones. However, as a person ages, the lower teeth become more visible as both lips begin to “slide down” the face.

“What happens is everything drops, just like the rest of the face and the breasts and other parts of the body … You can have the best face and brow lift, but if the minor youth cues are not addressed, you’re still going to look old,” said plastic surgeon Randal Haworth.

The procedure involves the tightening of muscles through a tiny incision inside the front of the lip. No foreign substances are injected and the result is a tighter lower lip that fully covers the age-revealing lower teeth.

Patients can expect some swelling after a lower lip lift, which usually takes about 20 minutes and is performed under local anesthesia or light sedation. A lower lip lift costs anywhere from $1,000 to $1,500.
