Months after the death of Donda West, mother of hip hop star Kayne West, a bill has been proposed to prevent cosmetic surgery accidents, like this one, from occurring in the future.
The niece of West is fighting for what she now calls her “passion” and hopes that the new bill will protect future patients.
Niece Takes Action
After Donda West died during surgery due to health complications, her niece, Yolanda Anderson has taken action to prevent these kinds of surgery mishaps from occurring again.
Anderson reportedly contacted 62nd District Assemblywoman Wilmer Amina Carter and they joined together to create a legislation that could change the future and safety of cosmetic surgery.
New Legislation in the Works
The new legislation will reportedly require all patients to have medical clearance from their physician before going in for cosmetic surgery.
The proposed bill, Assembly Bill 2968, has been named the Donda West Law.
I’m so excited, but we have so much to do,” says Anderson. “Bringing awareness to it is our next step, which is a major process. It’s very important and a lot of people want to be a part of it.”
Importance of Education
Dr. Michael McGuire, a spokesman for the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, believes that the bill will be beneficial and is a good concept for the future of surgery.
“In reality, the vast majority of people we operate on are very healthy people,” says McGuire. “It’s the patients that have a family history, and have a long operation, that’s the kind of patient that needs clearance from a family practitioner or specialist.”
